We have spent almost two weeks learning about energy resources in class. Using your background knowledge of these resources please write a comment answering the following question.
Imagine you live in an area that has access to all eight types of energy studied in class. If you were in charge of choosing the energy resource used by a city in the area, which energy resource would you select? Please explain why. In your explanation of why, include two specific pieces of evidence to support your selection and one specific piece of evidence that is an admission of a negative for this type of energy.
If I lived where there were all eight energy resources I would pick coal as my resource. I would pick coal since it easy to use and very cheap. On the other side coal takes a very long time to make. It takes about 300 million years to make which is a very long time to wait if coal runs out. If coal is taken to a power plant and burned properly is safe for the environment. If it is not done right the bad gases can escape into the environment it can harm the animals as well as the people. My second choice would be solar power since the sun wouldn’t die for a while. Solar power is also very easy to use. If you sign up to get solar power it is almost free since the sun if free. The only down side to using this source of energy is that you have to pay to get the reflectors up which costs money. Another down side to using Solar would be if it was a big city then there would have to be reflectors on every house and building to be able to power the whole city by solar. These are the two main choices that I would use as energy resources out of all eight choices these are the ones that I would chose.
ReplyDeleteIf I could choose an energy source out of the eight that we have studied I would choose hydropower because it is renewable. Renewable is better because you don’t have get more stuff to be able to allow the energy to flow. Also I would chose this because it is cost efficient and saves money. This would be better for everyone because people are paying too much money for electricity. One disadvantage of the energy source is that it can hold back rich sediment and nutrients in the river which can be bad for growing plants and other things with the water and bad for drinking if it holds back the nutrients.
ReplyDeleteIf I were in charge of choosing the energy resource used by a city in the area, I would choose the energy source hydropower. This resource is renewable. This is good because it never will run out so as soon as this area adapts to the resource they are set for as long as they want and they never have to change. Also, there is only one raw material needed for this resource and none of the energy can be harmful to the environment. The resources needed to power this energy source are not scarce. You can find them almost anywhere. One of the only bad parts of this energy source is that the dam can overflow. This can easily be changed into a positive aspect depending on where you put the dam. If you put the dam in a dry spot where there is not much water than it could actually help the planet when it overflows. In my opinion hydropower is the only logical energy resource to use.
ReplyDeleteThere are many energy sources that I would use if I had access to all of them, but the one that I would use is Geothermal. Geothermal is clean and safe for the surrounding environment. It does not release harmful gasses into the air like other energy sources do. Another reason is other clean energy sources like wind and solar, the weather doesn't cooperate you do not have any energy. With Geothermal the raw materials are always available. Also Geothermal does not take as much land to extract, with other clean materials it takes 90% more land to produce the same amount of energy. One of the biggest disadvantages about Geothermal is it is very expensive to install but once you get it installed it is very cheap and it is worth it once you actually get the energy. That is why I would choose Geothermal as my energy source if I had access to all of the eight energy sources.

I would pick natural gas as the energy source for my city. Natural gas is a very efficient source it has many benefits. It is a Cheaper and Cleaner low carbon fuel. It takes less time to build a natural gas power plant compared to other sources of energy. Also natural gas can be easily found in the US. Natural gas can also sometimes contaminate drinking water if it is not handled with care. This is why I would pick natural gas as the source of energy for my city.
ReplyDeleteI think hydropower is the best energy source. It is a green energy resource and it uses running water. That water can be salt or fresh, water is always somewhere moving water, and it will keep running until it runs out. That's why hydropower is the best energy resource.
ReplyDeleteIf i lived in an area were all eight types of energy can be used I would choose solar power. I would choose solar because it won't harm any animals. It will also store the energy so that at nighttime you will still have power.

If I were in charge of selecting an energy resource for a city in the area, I would choose geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is completely renewable, so compared to various other resources, this energy source will support the needs of everyone until the end. This type of energy is also completely natural, so plants, animals, etc. will not be harmed unlike petroleum, coal, oil, nuclear, etc. These sources will either cause harmful radiation waves, or release lethal gases into the atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteHere are two advantages of using geothermal energy. First, geothermal energy is reliable 24/7. The flow of the energy will never discontinue during disasters such as hurricanes, power outages, or severe weather (snow, hail, etc.). Other competing resources do not provide non-stop energy to buildings.
Second, geothermal energy is entirely natural from the depths of the Earth. The resource requires no hazardous fuels to generate, and is conservative to fossil fuels and non-renewable resources. The heated water is directly removed from the Earth, transformed into steam, rotates turbines, and the natural energy is carried away to homes and businesses for use.
A disadvantage of this energy source is that geothermal reservoirs, underground wells which contain the steam, are mostly located near active volcanoes, ragged mountains, etc.. Because of this, finding the perfect location is challenging and expensive, but I guarantee that geothermal energy is the best source for a city or any area in the world.
I believe that hydropower is the best energy resource for a city. I believe that hydropower is best because it is an all renewable and a reliable resource. Unlike traditional power stations that use fossil fuels, hydropower generators have practically no effect on the environment. And because they don’t depend on dams to store and direct water, they’re also better for the environment than large-scale hydroelectric stations. Also unlike many renewable and nonrenewable energy sources around, hydropower is much more stable and reliable. Many types of renewable energies, such as solar and wind, is like trying your luck in the lottery, because we never know when the sun or wind will appear or when the source will disappear. Unlike the other energy resources, hydropower uses water. Water will always be on earth, and even if some water is evaporated, the generators can adapt to the water changes and continue working. Non- renewable energy sources, such as coal and nuclear are even worse than any energy above, for the simple fact that it pollutes. They not only pollute, but nuclear energy and coal energy harms the environment, wildlife, and all the miracles of nature. There is a couple of problems though with hydropower. One is, it can kill fish and other living creatures that are in the water if they get lead to the generator. In dams they could build fish ladders but you could never be sure if it is going to keep all the creatures from dying. I believe hydropower would be best for cities all around the world for many reasons.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the best energy source that I would pick would be Geothermal. My first response is that geothermal energy is renewable. The reason it is renewable is that if you drill a hole in the earth's crust and strike a magma chamber you could poor water in and the energy would turn into steam. If able to contain the steam then would be able to power factories which could be able to contain a lot more you would be able to power an entire city in less than 2 weeks.
ReplyDeleteIf I were in charge of picking an energy resource used by a city in the area, I would choose nuclear energy. Nuclear energy's main raw material, uranium, is found all over the world and is typically easy to find. Plus, one pellet of nuclear energy is equal to 150 gallons of oil. However, nuclear power plants are very expensive and cost up to six million dollars to big. Although I think that it's money well spent!
ReplyDeleteIf I were given the choice to decide what energy resource would power an area, I would most certainly chose wind. From learning about wind in class I am positive it would be the most efficient. I learned that an individual building could have it’s own wind turbine on the roof and the building could be totally self sufficient. Plus, wind turbines don’t harm the environment with pollutions. Wind turbines also are a renewable energy source, and is very inexpensive once installed. Hydropower can cause harm to fish in the area, solar is unreliable, coal is non renewable and pollutes, nuclear is radioactive and is dangerous, geo thermal smells bad and is expensive, and natural gas is a complex system. Overall wind powers pros outweigh the cons.
ReplyDeleteIf I were in charge of choosing the energy source for a city in the area I would choose hydropower for the city’s energy resource. One of the reasons why I would choose hydropower is because it is good for the environment. Our environment is very important because if our environment was polluted and dirty a lot of people would get sick very often, and sometimes when people get really sick they die. Our population might start to decrease and a lot of other bad things could happen. If we had a clean healthy environment, people would be healthier and people wouldn’t get sick as often. My other reason why I would choose hydropower for the energy resource for a city in the area, is because it’s a renewable energy source because it is a part of a continuous cycle that never ends, so we would never run out. One thing that could happen that year in that city, is there’s a drought, causing there to be less energy because there wouldn’t be enough water to create the power needed. So if I were to choose what type of energy source for a city in the area I would choose hydropower for the city’s energy resource.
ReplyDeletei think hydropower would be the most useful because it is a huge renewable source and is very clean and can not pollute the world
ReplyDeleteI believe that the most efficient energy source to use for Blakeville would be solar power. Solar power doesn't give off any pollution or gasses. Solar energy can also work anywhere, as long as it's sunny outside. A downside to this energy source is that its expensive to buy the equipment required for obtaining the energy. In my opinion, solar energy is the most effective energy source.
ReplyDeleteAll the energy resources that we have studied are truly spectacular however there is one resource that is truly phenomenal. If I had to choose a resource I would choose Wind. Wind is an excellent resource because it doesn't pollute the Earth. It doesn't pollute the Earth like sometimes oil and coal can. The raw materials are completely made out of what earth gives us and that means it's very clean. Another thing the wind energy source is good for is that it can sit on top of buildings so it won't take much space. They make big turbines to be placed on wide acres of land or in the ocean but these little ones are just as powerful. One disadvantage is that the wind turbine might be loud if the wind speed is high. I think all the energy resources are important and good to use but Wind energy is the best to use because it provides lots of kinetic energy which is transformed into electricity people can use , you can put them anywhere, and it doesn't pollute the Earth.
ReplyDeleteI would choose the energy source Natural Gas. I would choose Natural Gas for many reasons, Natural gas is very cheap and easy to install, all natural, easy to use, and gives a lot of heat. But one negative for this products use is its is non-renewable , and takes a long time to form.
ReplyDeleteI would choose Hydropower (if there is a lot of rivers) because Hydropower uses the energy of the movement of water witch if find good because there wont be any pollutes to anything besides marine life. The one downside is that the marine life may die but they have a fish ladder that may help with that. So that is why i hose Hydropower to be the main energy source to choose from in a place with a lot of rivers. If there wasnt a lot of rivers i would choose Natural Gas.
ReplyDeleteIf I was in charge of choosing one of the 8 energy resources for our area I would choose solar power. With solar power you get energy from the sun and the sun is out all the time. Sometimes when you collect so much energy you get payed by the electricity company to give them your energy. Solar energy may be hard and expensive to set up but I think that it's all worth it in the end.
ReplyDeleteI would say that solar power is the best because it is the cleanest and the longest lasting. As long as you have the sun it is not hard to produce solar power. All you need is the materials to build a power plant to generate the power. It is also one of the cleanest because the sun does not harm the environment and unlike petroleum and coal it does not produce harmful gases. ~Olivia W.
ReplyDeleteWind power is the best form of energy. Even though wing mills take up a lot of space, they sill provide enough energy for a town. If it is a large town then it is not he best form of energy, but in a small town like ours, then it is the best to use. air is not burned like natural gas or petroleum (oil). It also does not produce harmful gases like geothermal. So for a small town with a lot of wind, then it is the perfect place to put it. ~ Nolan S.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to chose one of they elements of energy to use in my town it would be solar. I would choose solar because it is very natural and it can help keep our environment clean. Plus this energy uses the sun, which is all around us and very easy to access. But it can be expesnsive. But I personally think it's all worth it in the end.
ReplyDeleteI would pick Hydropower because it does not use up any of the water it takes in it just spits it back out, untouched. It also doesn't kill any animals if you put up the fishnet thing. It is reliable because unless your river runs dry the water will always be flowing!
ReplyDelete~Carly T.
I would choose Coal because its very cheap and it is really easy to get. It would also be a long time until we would run out just because there is so much. Coal can also power a lot of ground and is a great way to save money and power the city.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to choose a energy resource, I would choose Hydropower. I would choose Hydropower because it is renewable, safe, and doesn’t need many raw materials. The only thing that may happen is that it would kill some fish, get clogged and overflow. I think this is a very helpful resource that very many people will use.
ReplyDelete~Reece N.
I agree with Reece because we have the water cycle. The water cycle never changes and always goes in the same order. The water and be carried back to the mountains, lake, and sea. All you need for hydropower is a current of moving water. THe water will create the power and the water will keep coming.
